PJHS Character Education Classroom Visit Superintendent Robert Poole took time out of his busy schedule to visit my Character Education class last week. He, like many former students and other members of the Prescott community, have visited my classes as speakers to discuss their personal experiences as students and as employees in the workplace. During visits they encourage students to pursue a good education and to start planning for their future careers. Superintendent Poole, who attended K-12th grades in Prescott, shared that he never thought that coming from humble beginnings that he would have the opportunity to be superintendent of a school district. He said that he grew up in a home where both his parents worked hard to give their children the necessities of life but were unable to provide a lavish lifestyle. However, his parents enriched their children with several character-building suggestions, including respecting others, working hard, and taking initiative in pursuing success in life. He and his twin brother were the first to attend college and they took advantage of their opportunities to work toward careers that are rewarding and challenging. Superintendent Poole shared how he was a “walk-on” in football at Ouachita Baptist University but used the experience as motivation to work hard to gain a scholarship. He said he continued to use failure as motivation when he did not get jobs he applied for since the failure made him ready for the next opportunity that knocked at his door. In encouraging students to aim for perfection he used one of Coach Vince Lombardi’s quotes, “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection, we can catch excellence”. After his presentation students were able to ask questions about Superintendent Poole’s life journey, his expectations for his children, his duties as a superintendent, and the current construction of a new elementary school.
