Hello all!
This is your friendly high school science, Mrs. Hastings, teacher passing on some exciting science information to you all! We have 2 exciting events coming up.
Saturday, October 14th we will have what is called an Annular eclipse. This eclipse will be about 60%-70% coverage for our area. Because the moon's orbit causes it to be farther away from the Earth, it does not cover the sun completely so it is an annular eclipse. The sun is about 400 times larger than the moon but luckily for us, the moon is also 400 times closer to Earth making a total eclipse possible. In an annular eclipse, the moon is a little further away making it appear smaller than the sun, therefore a total eclipse is not possible. This is not the BIG event for our area, however.
April 8th 2024 will have a total eclipse. We are right on the line of totality. Totality is extremely rare. We have not had a total eclipse in Arkansas since 1918. There is one somewhere in the world about every 18 months but you have to be in the right place at the right time to see it.
The path of totality is very narrow and travels diagonally across Arkansas and the US. I have attached a map below. Since it is a narrow path across the United States, many people will be traveling to other places to see this. It is estimated that between 200,000- 1,000,000 people will be traveling to Arkansas. Up to 7,000,000 people nationwide will travel for this.
It is a major scientific event. NASA will be conducting studies near Russellville along the centerline. What makes this event so special? The Corona, which is the atmosphere of the sun, is only visible during a total eclipse. The atmosphere is 100s of times hotter than the surface of the sun. This is a physics abnormality so scientists and eclipse enthusiasts worldwide study this. Since they can only see it during a total eclipse, they put a lot of money and time into these events.
This will also be the only time you will see this. I am sure you all know that it is unsafe to look at the sun without safety glasses. The STEM coalition is working to provide students with solar glasses for the April event but I highly recommend you purchase some as soon as possible. Right now, they are about $2 each. In the weeks leading up to the eclipse, they will be much much more. A week before the 2017 eclipse amazon had these for $70 and up.
Special things that can be seen on this day: The Corona, The ring, the diamond Ring, Bailey's beads, going from bright daylight to almost total darkness in the afternoon, temperatures dropping up to 28 degrees. I could obviously talk about the eclipse all day but this is an email so below is a PBS video that is very educational.
Totality will last for 3-4 min depending on your location along the line. The whole eclipse will last a few hours. We should expect the time to be from around 1:30- 3:30

Want to know more? Ask me a question. I have been planning this event for several years now :)
Please share. This is a great educational opportunity for us all. We are thankful Mrs. Hastings is sharing this information and teaching her students all about each eclipse.

🐺 As football season continues and we fill the stands for our jr high school and high school football games, this is a reminder that we have implemented some important safety guidelines for all students attending games at Cummins Stadium. These guidelines will help ensure a secure and organized environment. 🏈 Mandatory Seating in the Stands: Starting immediately, all students are required to remain seated in the designated stands throughout the duration of the football games. This measure is designed to enhance safety and minimize potential risks associated with roaming around the stadium. 🏈 Jr high school students must be accompanied by an adult; dropping them off without supervision is not allowed. 🏈 Supervision for PES Students: For the safety and comfort of PES students, we kindly request that they be accompanied by an adult throughout the entire game, including restroom and concession stand breaks. This adult supervision will ensure their well-being and help maintain a controlled environment. 🏈 No In-Stadium Games or Playing Under Bleachers : To prevent any potential accidents or conflicts, students will not be allowed to engage in football or other games within the stadium premises. We encourage everyone to enjoy the game from their seats. 🏈 No pets are allowed inside the stadium. 🏈 No smoking, vaping, alcohol or any other prohibited substance is allowed on school campus. This is against school policy. 🏈 No cursing. Please do not direct any negative comments towards or about any players, coaches, or fans. We encourage everyone to be respectful of others. These changes have been implemented to create a safer and more enjoyable experience for all Curley Wolves fans. Your understanding and cooperation are appreciated as we work together to provide a positive environment for our students and families. #impactthepack #curleywolves #wolfpride
